Note from the Publisher ~ Being Present in the Moment

Finding your Roanoke family fun each week

October 25, 2016
I am just returning from Park City, UT where I got to spend several days with Macaroni Kid Publishers from all over the country at our annual Meet Up. If you've never been to Park City it is a beautiful and friendly place full of activities for the whole family all year long. Meaning you don't have to be a ski bum to enjoy this town!

One of the speakers I had the pleasure of listening to while at our conference was Matt Tenney. I actually got to spend a little bit of time with him and he is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Something he spoke about really hit home with me. He told us to all act like 3 year olds. Not the tantrum-throwing 3 year old, but the be present in the moment 3 year old. The 3 year old that takes wonder in their surroundings and lives in the moment.

As parents we are often torn in a million different directions and work on a million different things at once. This actually is not a good way to live, which I think we all know. There really is something to be said for focusing on one task at a time and also being fully present in that moment. One of my favorite quotes from Matt, “If we're not comparing the present moment to thoughts of the past or thoughts of the future, the present moment is actually perfect just as it is.” Right? Isn't the present moment just perfect?

While in Park City I had the pleasure of doing a guided, historic bike tour with White Pine Touring (ask for Mike Watson as your tour guide if you ever go!) and besides from taking a few pictures, I put away my phone, put away distractions and just rode my bike taking in the breathtaking scenery while learning about Park City's history. I would have hated to miss it by not being fully present in that moment. Because that present moment really was perfect.
