Great American Backyard Campout

By Laura Miller, MK Publisher Appleton, WI June 19, 2012
As parents, we’re always hearing about how important it is to keep our kids active, get them outside for some sunshine and spend time “unplugged.” A great opportunity to do just that comes this Saturday because June 23 is the 8th annual Great American Backyard Campout, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, as part of Great Outdoors month.

You can choose to camp in your own backyard, at a local campground, or participate in a public community campout.  And if Saturday doesn’t work for you, choose another day this month that does. You can choose to celebrate the great outdoors on your own this weekend, or you can register for the event and have a chance to win the giveaway either by creating your own team or by joining a public team. You can also set a fundraising goal, with the money raised going to the National Wildlife Federation.

June has been declared Great Outdoors month by many of our presidents. This year, President Obama made the proclamation saying in part “Great Outdoors Month is a time for all Americans to share in the natural splendor of which we are all proud inheritors. Whether camping, fishing, rock climbing, or playing in a neighborhood park, nature offers each of us the opportunity to get active, explore, and strengthen our bonds with family and friends. This month, let us celebrate our natural heritage by experiencing it together.”

For more information on the Great American Backyard Campout, visit the website, where you will find information on how to register a team, why camping is good for kids, how to donate, tips for fundraising, and tips on things to do and eat while camping.

Most importantly this month (and especially this weekend) is to HAVE FUN!! How are you going to celebrate Great Outdoors month?
