It's Valentine's! Tips on Taking Great Pictures

By Mike Wilson, Bohemian Robot Photography, Downtown Roanoke January 21, 2014
Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to put that baby in a cupid outfit, or your husband for that matter! But if you want prom night blackmail worthy photos, here are a few tips to make sure the kid doesn’t forgive you until well after graduation.

1. Be creative!
Sites like Pinterest are incredibly full of incredibly DIY ideas for any holiday! Put cut out hearts on the wall and have you child stand to the side and look like they are blowing into their hands ala dandelions! (I stole that idea… after all there are no new ones.)

One favorite Pinterest board full of Valentine's Photo Ideas can be found here.

Go to a fabric store and buy 3 yards of an inexpensive red fabric, decorate it with white hearts and boom.. instant backdrop!

2. The Camera
I am always asked what the best camera is. My answer? “The one in your hand” As a professional full time artist, I am not above using my iPhone in a pinch. In fact, my high end cameras are almost never at home. I have a one year old who likes to spill, pick up, throw, and in general destroy things of value. Don’t be afraid to use that phone, or your point and shoot. Heck, get funky and use film! (yes they still sell and develop it. Try PhotoUSA across from Towers)

3. When in Doubt, or for That Extra Special Day… Call a Professional.
When do you NOT want to DIY? Boudoir photos for that special Valentine’s gift. Please do not attempt this on your own. The amount of time both taking the pictures and post processing is like a bazillion hours to get that look that you see all over the Internet.

Baby’s first ____. You don’t get a second chance to get this right. First Christmas, first birthday. Take the presure off yourself and let the pro handle the stress. We are used to it!
