Innovative & Traditional Approaches to Treating Mental Health

Family Service of Roanoke Valley

August 26, 2014
We’ve all been through times—whether arguing with a spouse, struggling with a child’s behavior, or grieving the death of a parent—when talking to a professional in confidence helps handle the situation.

Those benefiting from counseling services at Family Service of Roanoke Valley range from children to individuals, from couples to families, and from abuse survivors to those suffering the loss of a loved one. When seeking help through Family Service, they are met by caring, compassionate, professionally-trained counselors in a variety of settings.

As an agency with more than 100 years of experience treating mental health challenges, Family Service combines tried and true approaches with unique and innovative methods to best treat a client’s needs.

One of the most cutting edge therapy techniques used by trained counselors at Family Service is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a psychotherapy approach used to help those experiencing unresolved trauma. The approach is especially beneficial to clients with law enforcement or military background. EMDR clients are able to reduce the lingering effects of trauma and develop more adaptive coping mechanisms. The approach has also been shown to aid in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), panic attacks, complicated grief, and other sources of trauma.

Family Service also partners with other organizations to provide invaluable services throughout the Roanoke Valley, such as the Community Grief and Loss Center. The center, established in 2012, provides free support group services for those mourning a death, whether by homicide, suicide or natural cause, of someone close to them. The center is here to help, and empowers individuals to develop healthy coping skills.
