Make a Difference in the Life of a Rescue Horse

October 21, 2014
New so far this year to the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue were 11 new horses. Did you know that RVHR works closely with County Animal Control officers to help those horses in need? RVHR take in up to 25 starving horses throughout each year. In over 12 years the organization has help 252 animals. Most of these horse were so malnourished and depleted that they are removed from their past owners by court orders to help save their lives. Cases we have seen and assisted with have ran from a 39 year old horse to a 10 month old colt. Each case being as heart break as our very first in 2003.

Each year the number rises of animal that are in need of our service. But with limited funding, limited volunteer and new homes for the horses we can only help so many. We can only feed so many, groom so many in one day, clean up after so many. RVHR is always looking for an extra hand to help care for the animals while they live their new lives here at the rescue. Maybe you would like to join other parents and their kids on Mommy-Daughter Day or Father-Son Day? These are available most any day and time. We love to share what we do with families while helping to teach the importance of becoming a volunteer in the community.

This year we have worked on new fundraising ideas that work. One is collecting needed items to feed the depleted horses, such as canned corn, corn oil, canned carrots and cornflakes. Things that can purchase at your local grocery store. You may see us out and about at your local Kroger’s store collecting needed items and selling our FurReal Pony Raffle Tickets for our December raffle drawing to help raise funding.

Along with heading out to local Krogers, we now are holding children’s birthday parties here at the barn for a low fee throughout the year they are fun for all ages. Let’s not forget we got to hold our very first Western Wedding here in the barn this October. This was exciting not only to the volunteers but the horses who got to stay up in the barn getting extra loving and carrots from the veggie trays.
