I have a new love. It is little and cute and gives me peace of mind every time I leave the house. I bet you're thinking it's a watch dog, aren't you? Well, it sort of is. Except it doesn't shed or need to be fed. Meet my new bestie, Piper.
Piper is a home security system that costs me exactly $0.00 each month. It took me about 5 minutes to set it up and another couple of minutes to get the app loaded on my iPhone, and that was it. Piper has a battery backup should there be a power outage and my favorite thing is the that this little camera (and I say little but don't let that fool you that it isn't fantastic) can send me email, text, or push notifications if movement or loud sounds are detected when I'm not at home. Oh, and it also has an alarm (really LOUD alarm, that I may have set off "accidentally" that scared my kids to death. oops!) that I can set to go off, too. Pretty sure it would scare away any intruder pretty quickly.
Piper has z-wave technology which allows it to connect to special home automation accessories, like turning lights on and off. With a simple tap of the screen on the Piper app I can control lights inside the house. How many times have you been out after a long day only to come home to a dark house? Or maybe the opposite, where you left and forgot to turn a light off? Let's just say I may or may not have had to use this more than I'd like to admit.
I think the other thing I love the most is the ability to check in on what's happening at home when we aren't there. I can access the live camera from my iPhone no matter where I am and that means I can always see what our dog and cat are up to. {Honestly, it's usually not much because they sure do love to sleep!} But knowing we can check in and even talk to them while we are gone is pretty fabulous. And, while not quite there yet, I know the day is coming soon where my kids will be left home alone. Knowing I can check in on them and talk to them with Piper while I'm gone, well, you can see why this make it my new bestie, right?
