Summer Camp Spotlight: Star City Academy for the Performing Arts

Where Roanoke kids find their voice, their confidence, and their place on stage.

There is something special about watching a child step onto a stage for the first time.

Maybe they’re a little nervous. Maybe they’re bursting with excitement. But somewhere between the first rehearsal and the final bow, something shifts. They stand taller. They speak louder. They believe in themselves a little more.

That is exactly what families find at Star City Academy for the Performing Arts right here in Roanoke.

If you have a child who loves to sing around the house, put on living room performances, memorize movie lines, or simply needs a place to grow in confidence, SCAPA’s  Summer Camps are worth a serious look.

Summer at SCAPA: One Week. One Show. Real Growth.

When school lets out, SCAPA’s summer camps take center stage.

Their week-long musical theater camps are designed to immerse kids in the full performing arts experience. Each session focuses on age-appropriate material and ends with a performance for family and friends. It gives campers a clear goal to work toward and a moment they can truly call their own.

During the week, kids:

  • Learn and rehearse music
  • Practice acting and character development
  • Build choreography and stage presence
  • Develop teamwork and communication skills

It is structured and intentional, but still full of fun. Kids are moving, creating, collaborating, and laughing together.

That type of confidence carries over,  into school, into friendships, and into everyday life!

More Than Theater

The performing arts do more than teach kids how to sing or memorize lines.

They teach kids how to speak clearly in front of others.
How to work as part of a team.
How to handle nerves.
How to try something new.

For some children, camp is about honing talent. For others, it is about finding their voice for the first time. Both matter.

If you are mapping out your summer calendar now (and I know many of us are), this is one of those camps that fills because families return year after year.

Summer at SCAPA classes and camps include five different offerings, from a cabaret, to dance class, elementary-age music theatre camps, and even a fully staged production, title TBA!
Summer at SCAPA will be going from June 8 all the way through September 6, so there's plenty of time to join the fun!

Whether you are considering the Spring Break camp or looking ahead to summer, it is smart to register early and secure your child’s spot.

If your child has ever put on a show in your living room, this may be the summer they take that performance to a real stage.
