Hiking, Camping, and Road Trips Come With Weather Risks

Here’s how to prepare your family for safer summer travel and outdoor fun.

Summer is the best season for family outings: camping trips, hiking trails, and road trips to visit distant relatives or to discover a new place. The weather in summer is perfect for these activities, but there are a few dangers that are easily overlooked in the process of preparing for the trip.

A little knowledge of the weather can go a long way in making your journey enjoyable.

Heat is a common worry, especially for children. When the temperature is high, it can rise steadily, and children may not realize when they are getting too hot. Try to do outdoor activities in the morning or evening if you can, and make sure to take plenty of water breaks and rest!  It's better to cut your day short on a hot day than to keep going.

Thunderstorms are a regular occurrence during summer, especially in the afternoon and evening. Before embarking on a hike or pitching a camp, it is essential to check the weather forecast and monitor the changes in the sky. If you hear thunder, it is high time to relocate to a safe site, even before the rain begins.  While camping, it is important to note the location of the nearest strong shelter. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid low-lying areas that are prone to flooding when it rains. When camping in the woods, be aware of dead trees or large dead limbs around your site, these can easily become a hazard during high wind events.

For families who are going to be in mountainous areas, the weather can change very fast. This can mean that the temperature can drop suddenly, a storm can develop rapidly, and there may not be cell service. It is a good idea to be prepared for unexpected weather changes. One way you can stay prepared, even when outside of cell phone service range, is by packing a NOAA weather radio. Find out more about NOAA weather radios and how they can keep you and your family safe on our blog post [https://www.adiabat.io/post/what-is-a-noaa-weather-radio.] Our team has partnered with Midland, the most trusted brand in certified NOAA weather radios. Check out their selection here [https://alnk.to/cHQhwJG] and use code PERK15 for 15% off.

Road trips also come with their own set of weather concerns. Heavy rain can cause poor visibility, strong winds can make driving exhausting, and hot weather can cause car breakdowns. It is always a good idea to have water in the car, flexible driving schedules, and to pull over to a safe place if the weather turns bad. A little delay is always better than the risks driving in bad weather.

Explaining weather to kids while traveling doesn’t have to be scary. You can tell them that changes in the weather are just like following a map or directions. Engage your older kids in checking the weather forecast or pointing out clouds, and reassure younger kids that precautions are just part of taking care of each other.

Summer vacations are all about creating memories, and not about being concerned about all the things that could go wrong. Staying informed about the weather and making adjustments accordingly can help families have a worry-free experience during the summer season.
