My Family's Unplugged Weekend at KOA Cherokee/Great Smokies

June 23, 2015
Sometimes unplugging and getting away from it all is just what the doctor ordered. While I will be the first to admit I'm addicted to my cell phone and not the biggest fan of camping, I was so excited to spend a few days at KOA Cherokee/Great Smokies camping with my family, or maybe glamping is a better word? Anyway, I'll come clean and let you know we had a fantastic river front cabin with A/C, 2 bedrooms, a living area and kitchen. Exactly my style of camping. Of course if you're in to more traditional tent camping or RV camping, KOA Cherokee can totally hook you up, too.

We had never been to a KOA before so not knowing what to expect at all I have to say we were all pretty impressed. Within 30 minutes of our arrival my kids were splashing in the pool and having a blast. And, much to my excitment, I was relaxing poolside with a book while my husband played with the kids! Woohoo!

Truth be told there was a ton for our kids to do at the KOA. Mini-golf, bouncy pad, banana bikes, tubing, fishing, plus daily activities like arts and crafts and games. Honestly we could have been perfectly content never leaving the KOA but having never been to Cherokee, NC or Great Smoky National Park, we had to take a few excursions to explore. Highly recommended if you visit down that way are the Oconaluftee Indian Village and a hike up to Clingmans Dome in the Smokies.

The best part of the whole trip was really just relaxing, putting my cell phone away (though I did use it to take pictures!), and spending time with my kids and husband. Our cabin was right on the river and it was unbelievably peaceful. Especially when my husband took the kids fishing and I had an hour or so to myself!

Our kids agreed that their favorite part of the trip was tubing on the river. We were lucky to have a little cut out near our cabin where we could walk down to put our tubes in the river. Our kids just loved it and they can't wait to tube again closer to home.
