What's Up Roanoke Moms ~ We Lost Power and My Kids Almost Died

July 21, 2015
Last week during those crazy storms we lost power. And, my kids almost died. Ok, so maybe that's a slight exaggeration but, according to them, it was the worst day of their lives and they might as well be dead. For the first hour they thought it was pretty cool and went around the house with flashlights (because we lost power at night) and they were having fun. Even going to bed by candlelight was pretty cool. But then came morning....and the power was still out...and my kids lost their minds.

It's like they forgot to how to function. Like there was absolutely, postively nothing they could do without power, TV, and wifi. Oh. My. Gosh. What have I created? That was my thought. How can my kids possibly have forgotten how to play. Like just play. And the thing is I know they can "play" because they do it all time and have an entire Lego village created in the play room and they'll spend hours down there playing.  And they spend hours each day throwing the baseball against the house {That sounds worse than it is. It's actually ok.} Trust me. My kids are not allowed to spend all day watching TV or playing video games. Ever. They even love to camping where by definition there is no electricity. So this weird behavior really confused me.

I realized that this generation we're raising is just different. Of course, I've known this for awhile but the power outage really brought it to the surface. Wifi and electronics and technology are just integrated into their very being and they rely on it {apparently a little too much} For better or worse. Thankfully, it wasn't a full 24 hours when the power came back on and my Minecraft loving boys dove onto their devices with glee. Seriously, it was like Christmas morning.

So all is well that ends well...and I have hope because we're taking a camping trip later this week and I know my boys won't think twice about their beloved electonics....so maybe we are doing something right afterall!
