By Koren Smith, Marketing Director SMWV April 9, 2019

The Bubble is an exhibit designed by the Science Museum of Western Virginia in 2017 as a safe pace for all visitors, particularly those with sensory disorders. The Bubble is a multi-sensory environment that is peaceful, enjoyable and contained. Designed as a Snoezelen Environment, The Bubble reduces agitation and anxiety and re-directs attention to the items within the environment that nurture growth and development.

What is a ‘multi-sensory environment’?

A multi-sensory environment empowers individuals to overcome sensory deficits through a form of communication that focuses on the natural process of multi-sensory stimulation. Multi-sensory environments facilitate coordination and motor development; encourage creativity and imagination; and sharpen awareness, focus and concentration.

How does The Bubble achieve this setting?

The Bubble is a safe environment that is contained and therefore encourages individual exploration of the space. The room is relaxed and is divided two spaces. The first is a more open environment with easily accessible toys and games that focus on visual, tactile and auditory stimulation. The other is a sheltered space with low lighting and calming stimuli to comfort those who might be feeling overwhelmed and give privacy to those who need it. All items within this exhibit focus on sensory stimulation and the development of fine motor skills. They include a variety of different textures, colors and shapes to address tactile needs and create a safe and inviting haven for our visitors.

How does The Bubble accommodate the whole family?

The Bubble is enclosed which allows individuals to explore the space freely and parents/guardians and watch them learn from the comfortable sofas. The Bubble is also located on the fifth floor of the museum next to the MakerLab. The MakerLab is an open learning environment that encourages creativity and imagination to build and design objects using the free materials. The MakerLab is easily visible from The Bubble and allows older children to enjoy other areas of the museum within sight of parents/guardians.

Macaroni Kid Roanoke, Science Museum of WesternVirginia and FAVE: Facilitation Awareness and Valuable Experiences are hosting an all abilities- egg-cessible and Sensory friendly Easter Egg Hunt on April 20th.
