Who or what inspired you to start your business?

I have had a side hustle for 20 years and jokingly called it my husband after my divorce 10 years ago.  As a single mom, despite having a great career, I really needed the extra money to continue supporting my boys.  I wanted them to be able to experience enriching activities like sports, boy scouts and summer camps.  In addition to going on adventures with me!  It's really fun to be able to control your income with sales. You can work a little or a lot- and set goals uniquely to you.  Currently, I earn money doing freelance sales and marketing activities, writing and hosting events. I also have my health and life insurance license and sell Medicare Advantage and supplemental products.  This is a field I will grow to a large income, but I'm able to choose to balance my activities around my children's schedule now.

What has having your own business meant to your family? The good, the bad, the ugly?

The good is being able to provide enriching activities for my children despite being a single mom. We've been able to experience so many fun things together.  In addition, my sons learned early on how to talk to the public. They have helped me with many of my endeavors.  My youngest son has an entrepreneurial spirit that I think he'll grow into business opportunities, even before he's an adult.  My oldest is a very hard worker. He's more introverted than us but he gladly helps me with data entry and pre-event prep.

The bad is, being completely free-lance for the past 4 years has been extremely time consuming.  When you are in sales, you have to always work towards specific goals and not stop until you make it, or the lights won't stay on and the mortgage company doesn't stay happy with you. I know if I'd kept on the corporate path, we would probably have more time together with less stress, but I also would not have been able to spend time visiting them at school, picking them up from their activities, or rarely missed a game or event.  It's a trade off for sure.

I'm not sure I'd call anything ugly- I'm an "enjoy the journey" type of gal!

If you had to choose one strength that you possess that has helped you be the most successful, what would it be and why?

I pay attention.  People who are successful have similar traits. Some of us are born with them, some us learn them. It's all about consistent habits and keeping your goals clearly in site.  I'm also a people person, I love meeting new people, learning what they are passionate about and figuring out how I can help them. I add value and give to others before I ask them for anything.

What are you passionate about?

I'm passionate about inspiring other women to take ownership in their lives. To believe in yourself and believe you're worthy of all of your dreams coming true.  I am also passionate about supporting local businesses. Roanoke has some real gems, makers, artists, and amazingly delicious restaurants. Support Local!

What piece of advice would you give yourself if you were just starting your business again today?

I would have saved more money and invested it in things that bring residual monthly income- like real estate.  So I'd have a steady stream of reliable income while I explore all the freelance things I enjoy that aren't always reliable, although I'm working on making them more reliable.

What has been your favorite local resource to support you in your business?

FemCity Roanoke is an amazing community for women in business.  The relationships and connections are authentic and genuine. Members are savvy and resourceful with an abundant mindset and aren't afraid to share information to help others grow.  A rising tide lifts all ships. Join us!
