I'm a Peaceful Goldfish: A New Book that Helps Kids with Overwhelm

Who knew that pretending to be a dragon, elephant or flower could help a child with anxiety?

By Beth Bell, Publisher April 13, 2021

We are very excited about the launch of our friend, Shoshana Chaim's, new book I Am a Peaceful Goldfish.  I Am a Peaceful Goldfish is a picture book that shares playful breathing techniques kids and their families can use when feeling overwhelmed.  We think this is very important, especially after a year of stress, worry and turmoil.  It is available in all book stores April 13th and online.

In the book, two kids use their imagination to pretend to be elephants, flowers, and even dragons, learning how to be mindful and to calm anxiety.  Written by Shoshana Chaim, who hopes the book helps young kids feel in control of their minds and bodies—a skill all the more relevant with the increased stress children are experiencing due to the pandemic. It was really important to Chaim that the book be inclusive, and that every child can identify with it and see themselves in it.  You can see this immediately, as you open the cover of the book.

Just like walking or reading, children need to be taught and need to practice how to overcome trying situations. In this book, Peaceful Goldfish, a younger sibling learns how to take deep breaths to deal with the strong emotions such as feeling angry, scared, sad or disappointed. Who knew that pretending to be a dragon, dandelion, elephant or flower could give children the tools they need to grow emotionally?

I Am a Peaceful Goldfish teaches kids essential and easy-to-learn life skills:

  • It’s okay to feel overwhelmed or anxious!
  • Feeling calm and in control are just a couple of easy breaths away
  • How to self-regulate and relieve anxiety

The original version of the story was created to help the author's own children and students be more mindful and give them back control over their minds, bodies and actions.

A soothing, logical, and playful introduction to mindfulness for young listeners. - Kirkus Reviews
