In a powerful step toward supporting vulnerable newborns and families in crisis, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has become the first Safe Baby Box location in the state of Virginia.
If you're unfamiliar with what a Safe Baby Box is, you're not alone—and it's something every caregiver, parent, and community member should know about.
What Is a Safe Baby Box?
Safe Baby Boxes are part of a nationwide initiative designed to provide a safe, anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender their newborns legally, securely, and without shame. The boxes are temperature-controlled, alarm-equipped, and located at hospitals or fire stations where medical professionals can respond immediately once a baby is placed inside.
This program is connected to Virginia’s Safe Haven Law, which allows a parent to surrender a baby up to 30 days old at designated locations without fear of criminal prosecution—provided the child shows no signs of abuse or neglect.

Why It Matters
In moments of desperation, fear, or isolation, some parents may not know where to turn. The Safe Baby Box provides an alternative that protects both the life of the baby and the rights and safety of the parent. It's not a solution anyone hopes will be needed—but for someone in crisis, it can be lifesaving.
With the installation at Carilion Roanoke Memorial, our local community now joins more than 180 other locations nationwide in offering this compassionate option. The box is located just outside the hospital's emergency department and is accessible 24/7.
What Caregivers and Families Should Know
As a parent or caregiver, you may never need a Safe Baby Box—but knowing about it can help you support others in your circle who might be struggling silently. If you or someone you know is overwhelmed and feels they have no safe option, there is help—and there are people who care.
You can also use this as a conversation starter with teens and young adults in your life. Educating the next generation about safe, judgment-free resources empowers them to make informed, life-affirming decisions should they or a friend ever be in crisis.
A Community That Cares
This Safe Baby Box is more than a metal container—it's a reflection of a community that chooses to care. It’s a sign that Roanoke is willing to lead with compassion, support families in need, and protect its most vulnerable citizens from the very first moment of life.
