Collect Acorns with Your Kids and Help Grow Virginia’s Forests

Bag, tag, and drop acorns at the Salem Regional Office by Oct. 15—it’s fun and helps nature!

Have you noticed the plunk, plunk, plunk of acorns hitting the ground lately? Those little nuts aren’t just squirrel snacks—they’re the start of tomorrow’s forests! And this fall, your family can play a role in helping Virginia grow strong, healthy trees for generations to come.

The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) is inviting families across the state to join in their annual acorn and nut collection campaign. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s a great excuse to get outdoors with your kids while giving back to nature.

Here’s how it works:

  • Bag ‘em! Collect acorns, walnuts, or chestnuts and place them in a paper bag or cardboard box (no plastic bags).
  • Tag ‘em! Write the date, tree species (if you know it), and collection location. If you’re unsure, just add a leaf from the tree. You can also check out the Identification Guide.
  • Drop ‘em! Bring your bag to the nearest DOF office by Tuesday, October 15.

Your family’s donation helps DOF nurseries grow trees—like black oaks, chestnut oaks, white oaks, and black walnuts—that are hard to find and vital for Virginia’s forests. These trees will eventually be planted across the Commonwealth to support wildlife, improve air and water quality, and keep our communities green.

Family Tip: Make it a scavenger hunt! See who can find the biggest acorn, the smoothest walnut, or the funniest-looking leaf. Not only will your kids learn about trees, but you’ll also be helping the environment together.

Deadline: October 15, 5 p.m.
Where: Drop off at your nearest DOF office (use the “Find a Forester” tool at www.dof.virginia.gov).

So grab a paper bag, head outside, and start collecting. It’s a small way for your family to make a big difference—plus, it’s the perfect excuse to crunch through some fall leaves while you’re at it!
