Fall Family Fun in Roanoke: Top PLAY Roanoke Events & Adventures

Live music, hikes, Bug & Bat Nights, paddling, and family events this fall.

Just because the school year is getting underway doesn't mean family fun has to come to an end.

In fact, I think fall is one of the best times to get outside in the Roanoke Valley. The cooler weather makes it easier to explore, the mountains begin to show off their fall colors, and PLAY Roanoke fills the calendar with activities that make it easy to spend time together.

Whether your family enjoys hiking, live music, wildlife, paddling, or trying something completely new, there's no shortage of opportunities to make memories this season.

Music on the Mountain

If you've never spent an evening on Mill Mountain listening to live music, this is the year to do it.

Music on the Mountain returns each month from August through November at the Mill Mountain Discovery Center. Local musicians, food trucks, kid-friendly activities, and some of the best views in Roanoke come together for a relaxed evening that's just as enjoyable for parents as it is for kids.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, grab dinner from the featured food truck, and enjoy a night outdoors while the kids stay busy with crafts and activities. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, and ice cream are also available for purchase.

See What Comes Alive After Dark

Most of us leave the park when the sun starts to set. Bug & Bat Nights prove that's exactly when the fun begins.

These guided evening programs give families the chance to experience Roanoke's parks in a completely different way. Participants use UV lights to attract insects that are rarely seen during the day, then listen as specialized microphones pick up the echolocation sounds of bats flying overhead.

It's one of those programs that kids will talk about for weeks afterward, and parents usually leave learning something new, too.

A Science Class Without Four Walls

If you're homeschooling or your child simply loves being outside, Nature Lab is worth a look.

This six-week program for children ages 8–12 meets Wednesday mornings at Mill Mountain Park and is taught by a licensed teacher. Instead of sitting at a desk, students learn through observation, experiments, nature journaling, investigations, and hands-on exploration.

Over six weeks they'll study ecosystems, wildlife, plants, weather, and the changing seasons while building confidence and curiosity along the way.

Hit the Trail

Fall and hiking just seem to go together.

PLAY Roanoke has several guided hikes planned this season, giving families a chance to explore scenic overlooks, wooded trails, waterfalls, and other beautiful places around the Roanoke Valley. Many hikes are designed for ages 8 and older, making them a fun outing for families with older kids who are ready to venture beyond the neighborhood playground.

You don't have to know the trail or plan the route—just bring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and enjoy the adventure.

Looking for a Challenge?

Crash the Cove returns to Carvins Cove on August 31 for a day that's all about getting out on the water.

Whether you're racing in a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or rowing shell, or simply cheering on participants from shore, it's a great way to enjoy one of the Roanoke Valley's favorite outdoor destinations before summer officially gives way to fall.

A Little Magic at Fishburn Mansion

Not every fall adventure has to involve hiking boots.

The Whimsical Wishes Royal Eras Princess Party brings favorite princesses, music, crafts, games, treats, dancing, and plenty of photo opportunities to historic Fishburn Mansion. If you have a little one who loves to dress up, this is sure to be a memorable afternoon.

One of the things I appreciate about PLAY Roanoke is that there really is something for every family. Some weekends call for a quiet hike. Others are perfect for live music on Mill Mountain, a paddle across Carvins Cove, or staying up a little later to discover what comes alive after dark.

If you're looking for new ways to enjoy the season, this is a great place to start. Pick one event or try several. Either way, you'll be making the most of fall right here in the Roanoke Valley.
