The Science Museum of Western Virginia offers fully hands-on camps in a variety of STEAM subjects. Located in Downtown Roanoke, our facility is surrounded by innovation and inspiration to help our campers gain a unique understanding of their opportunities for a promising STEAM career.
Science-based Summer Camps are essential in maintaining STEAM skills that are developed throughout the school term and often deplete over summer break. Attending fun and engaging Summer Camps results in marked improvements across all STEAM subjects when they return to school! Additionally, Summer Campers gain key skills, such as team work and confidence, that are retained for their future careers.
All Summer Camp Programs have a Rising K – 2nd Grade class, and a 3rd-5th Grade class. Camps run from 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday, with the option of adding Before and After Care, running 8am-9am and 4pm-5pm, respectively.

COVID-19 Procedures and Protocols
During these unprecedented times, cultural facilities are adapting quickly and cautiously to the effects of COVID-19. The Science Museum of Western Virginia is complying with all federal, state, and local regulations and recommendations to facilitate Summer Camp programs with camper safety as a priority.
As such, our Summer Camp Programs have been adapted in several ways, including but not limited to:
- Each Summer Camp will be limited to twenty campers and a small number of staff and/or volunteers.
- Staff and volunteers will be required to wear face masks while working with campers and, unless required for a camper’s safety, behavioral concerns, or educational needs, museum team members will also maintain a 6-foot distance from campers and each other.
- Increased hand washing and sanitization stations will be present throughout the museum, and a dedicated team will be responsible for implementing an effective cleaning regime.
