Roanoke Area Summer Reading Programs for Kids

Summer reading programs are important to keep young brains learning and engaged during the non-school months.  They are designed to be fun and rewarding!  Area schools publish a summer reading list based on grade level, to prepare for the upcoming school year. So it's a great idea to obtain the list from your school and then sign up for rewards through one of the summer reading programs listed below. Most of the summer reading programs in Roanoke, Virginia also have an adult challenge.  Here is a round-up of summer reading programs in Roanoke, Virginia to keep your kids motivated and reading all summer long!  In addition to local summer reading programs, we've included programs and incentives offered by retailers, restaurants, and more. We'll keep adding programs and sharing them as we get more information.

Our local libraries have summer reading programs all summer long for kids and teens. Best part? They are FREE!

Roanoke City Library- More Information Coming Soon!



Roanoke County Library - Kids, Teens, and Adults are invited to Read Beyond the Beaten Path for great prizes.  The Kickoff is June 4th from 3-5 p.m. at South County Library. The library has events lined up throughout the summer to support summer reading, outdoor play, STEAM collaborations with Kids Square and Mill Mountain Theatre, and so much more! Learn More:


Botetourt County Library- Botetourt is also taking reading off the Beaten Path this summer. Prizes are available for kids and caregivers alike!  The library is offering fun programming such as Capture the Flag and Animal Tracks- a chance to learn about local wildlife, in addition to the reading challenge. National Summer Reading Programs and Awards

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program

Barnes and Noble are awarding kids, in grades 1st-6th, a free book for reading eight books over the summer. They will need to record the books they read in this printable journal and turn it in at any Barnes and Noble store between July 1 and August 31, 2022.

Pizza Hut - Camp Book It!

Pizza Hut is offering 2 programs for kids ages 4-12.  On their Camp Book It page, they offer ideas and resources to help parents create their own reading goals for their kids. When the students meet their goals, they are awarded a Personal Pan Pizza!  

Chuck E. Cheese Rewards Calendars

Chuck E. Cheese offers rewards and resources for meeting many goals. In addition to reading, they have a chart for good grades, doing chores, cleaning, birthdays, and other activities.  Children receive ten free Play Points (with food purchase) for reading every day for two weeks.  Mark each day your child reads on this printable calendar and bring it to any location. 

Scholastic Summer Reading

From May 9th through August 19th, kids can visit the summer zone in Scholastic Home Base.  By creating an account on Home Basekids can join a community of readers and will be able to read books and stories; attend author events; interact with their favorite characters; play book-based games and activities; join dance parties; and more!  Sign up for Home Base and visit the Summer Reading zone to start your Reading Streak™ today! by completing reading streaks in Home Base, kids will unlock a donation of 100,000 books from Scholastic to Save the Children for kids in rural America with limited or no access to books.

SYNC Audiobooks for Teens

Teenagers can get two free audiobook downloads every week during the summer via Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive.  Sora is available for download in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
