Garst Mill Park Gets New Playground

Roanoke County Maintains Investment in Family Recreation

February 23, 2017

A new playground is now open at Roanoke County’s Garst Mill Park, replacing the previous equipment which had served the park for an estimated 25 years. The new playground features five slides as well as multiple climbing structures and bridges. Enhancements add to the play experience through equipment such as bongos, a twister, hour glass, telescope and hand cycler.

The Garst Mill playground replacement project was selected as part of this year’s capital maintenance budget, designed to ensure the long term protection of community assets. Roanoke County saved approximately $30,000 in purchase cost for the playground through the 2016 Playground Grant offered by the manufacturer, GameTime.

According to Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Doug Blount, “This new playground represents Roanoke County’s commitment to providing quality play places for our youth, while helping ensure a healthy and active community. The much needed update will serve the South Roanoke County community for years to come.”

Roanoke County’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism department maintains approximately 2,300 acres of public space at over 80 sites throughout the County, including 18 playgrounds. For more information about Roanoke County’s parks and recreation services please visit roanokecountyparks.com
