Virginia's Blue Ridge offers hundreds of hiking adventures. We decided to focus this guide on a handful of hikes that families with young children can easily enjoy. Please remember to follow all safety precautions posted regarding hiking near waterfalls.
Bottom Creek Gorge boasts the second highest waterfall in Virginia. There are 3, very clearly marked trails, ranging from 3-5 miles total hike. The yellow trail takes you to an overlook to view the falls, which is the perfect spot for lunch and is an easy hike for kids. In addition, there are some historic buildings and farms along the way, teaching a bit of history from the area. This trail is part of a nature conservancy, so dogs are not allowed.
This 4 mile, moderate hike, to the 66 foot Cascade Falls is always a family favorite. The scenery is beautiful along the way and there is plenty of room to sprawl out close to the water at the end. Cascades trail is in the New River Valley, near one of our favorite local getaway spots, Mountain Lake Resort.
Fairy Stone is located in Basset, VA, a short drive from Roanoke. Join in a nature hike to learn about the cross shaped Fairy Stones and hunt for your own. The park also features a swimming lake, with fun kid inspired water toys.
Roaring Run is an easy 1.5 mile hike that is enjoyable for the whole family. The best part?! A natural rock waterslide!
I have a confession. I used to tell my sons that the Star Trail was the ONLY way to get to Mill Mountain Zoo. The zoo was a reward for the climb! Not to mention all the other fun that awaits with the Discovery Center, Playground, Nature Trails and picnic shelters. The Star Trail is a moderate 1.4 mile climb and the trailhead is at 1206 Riverland Road.
This 3 mile moderately difficult loop is located in Camp Alta Mons and leads to a 40 foot waterfall. What we love - After climbing a few boulders or scrambling up a short mountain trail, you arrive at the waterfall, which has a calm, wide base for splashing and cooling off.
