Local Gem: Loch Haven Lake Club

Your endless summer begins here!

By Beth Bell, Publisher July 10, 2018

I've reached the bittersweet age of parenting where the days and years are fleeting and summers with my teenage sons are quickly vanishing.  I'm finding myself only wanting one thing- more time. More time to play, and less time working and running to activities. More time to count stars and dream of the future. Instead, we are planning the future. Next summer, will include college tours for my oldest son.

I've found a place where we all slow down. Where we play, laugh, and exercise our body and spirits. Where there are no video games or smart phones- and GASP!- no WiFi.  You may have heard of this magical place, it's been around since I was a kid, but maybe you didn't know you could also enjoy it with your family? Loch Haven Lake, with it's crisp- spring-fed waters are the perfect answer to the summer heat, but most of all providing our family with the time and fun we so desperately needed.

My sons, aged 14 and 16, spend most of their days at home, either not talking or arguing.  However, when we go to Loch Haven, they kayak, swim and shoot hoops together.  Then we eat a picnic meal and do it all over again. Oh, and bonus, when we go home, they are too tired to argue!

Loch Haven also hosts a few fun events each year for members, including their nostalgic July 4th celebration.  July 4th festivities included a cookie contest, a bubble gum blowing contest, a watermelon parade, canoe races and greasy watermelon toss.  I seriously felt like I had a day at Kellerman's or my own summer camp!   It's not too late to get in on the fun! Upcoming events for members include an Ice Cream Social and Potluck, Duathlon and Campout .

I've also gone to the club by myself when I have had only an hour or two.  I sit in a chair by the peaceful lake and read a book or gather my thoughts on my next project.  These stolen moments of self care are starting to be my favorite.

I love that a Loch Haven Lake Club membership is a year round membership. That means a longer swimming season, year round bliss on the hiking and biking trails, and enjoying family picnics way into the fall season.  If you're looking for your own slice of heaven, I'd encourage you to explore if a Loch Haven Lake Club membership is right for your family.  Mention Macaroni Kid Roanoke to receive $25 off the joining fee.
