Meet Tiffani Sheperd, Owner of Bits N Bobbles eBay store and LuLaRoe Gypsy Star
Who or what inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired to start Bits N Bobbles, my eBay store, by a family friend wanting to downsize and having no idea how to start. I told her I could help her out and it evolved into a whole business! I was inspired to start selling LLR because I just love the clothes so much (like I got seriously addicted!!) and I figured it would be an easy start since I already had a lot of the back of the house stuff in place because of the eBay store.
What has having your own business meant to your family? (the good, the bad, the ugly)
When I first started Bits N Bobbles, we had just moved back to the Roanoke area from Northern VA. I was taking on the role of full time caregiver for the hubster's granddad. he was still pretty active at that time and really just needed someone to clean, fix meals, and do meds. I was left with lots of free time, and I was feeling a little lost. It was the first time I hadn't had a job since I was 16. So starting the business gave me a sense of purpose, and I was able to contribute a little to household bills.
I added LuLaRoe in 2017 because I fell in love with the brand and as a new mom really wanted something to help me meet new people. Having my own businesses has help pay our bills and keep us afloat when my hubby lost his job (and was unemployed over a year). I have been able to stay at home and care for my son without needing daycare, which has been really nice. I am so thankful for being able to enjoy the baby stage. The main drawback I find is sometime my inventory can take over my house. I have seriously taken over the basement and part of the garage. It's a little crazy. I have also grown a little over my personal capabilities so I have finally decided to hire an assistant (I'm really excited for her to start tomorrow). A lot of times I have have to work after my son has gone to bed, so I also am constantly tired. LOL. I run on lots and lots of coffee.
If you had to choose one strength that you possess that has helped you be the most successful- what would it be and why?
I am highly organized. It is extremely helpful because I deal with multiple consignors for both Bits N Bobbles and LLR and I have to keep track of inventory. I have taken what I have learned doing Bits N Bobbles consignments to help LLR consultants that are going out of business move their inventory by taking it on consignment, which is something I don't think very many (if any) other consultants are doing.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about helping others. I help my consignors simplify their lives and sell items they don't have time to deal with. I help my customers find the one of a kind item that completes their home, makes the perfect gift, or simply makes them feel good and beautiful.
What piece of advice would you give yourself if you were just starting your business again today?
Hire help sooner! and "Done is better than perfect" I have a real problem with constantly striving for perfection and sometimes things don't get done in a timely fashion.
In what ways can your business help another mom?
Both of these businesses are great for moms wanting to earn additional income for their families. I am constantly learning and love to share with my team members. Now is a great time to start a LuLaRoe business. We have some amazing new lines coming out and they just reduced the initial inventory buy in AND you get to pick you initial styles, which is awesome. The key to the Wholesale/Retail business is consistency, owning your sales data, and really building a solid community. I firmly believe in attraction marketing and fighting against the bad name direct sellers get for being spammy.
What has been your favorite local resource to support you in your business?
The Post Office! LOL. My local post man and UPS guy are champs. I schedule my pickups almost daily, and I get packages daily. They make my life so much easier.
