Moms Taking Care of Moms

Support for the Sandwich Generation

By Beth Bell, Assistant Publisher May 6, 2019

If you are between the age of 30 and 50, raising children, and taking care of aging parents, you are part of the quickly growing Sandwich Generation.  You find yourself physically, emotionally and financially worn. You are one in eight American adults, honored to be taking care of the people who mean the most to you in this world.

Here are a few tips to help you during this era:

1. Seek the advice of a certified financial planner. They can help with long term care planning, tax advice, and family financial planning.

2. Consider aging in place and caregiving services such as those offered by Care Advantage

3. We hate to state the obvious, and know it's hard to do, even when you are only taking care of kids, but try to get some mind clearing exercise daily. Even if you just take a 15 minute walk

4. If you are married or in a relationship, caring for aging parents can leave your partner feeling neglected and disconnected.  Often, what we think is a temporary situation, becomes several years of increasing responsibilities.  If you would pay a babysitter for a date night, why not a caregiver?  If needed, discuss how to set healthy boundaries with a counselor.

Register for an upcoming workshop to learn more about the resources available to help you with the financial and medical aspects of caregiving.

Beth Bell, of Bailey's Insurance Group and Beckie Spaid, with Care Advantage are offering a complimentary workshop to provide information and resources to families with aging parents.  Beth and Beckie will share tips to help ease the financial burden of medical care, services to help your parents age in place, home modifications to consider and support networks.
