Mid-Summer Camps for Middle Schoolers

By Beth Bell, Publisher July 9, 2019

Okay, Moms and Dads, we've made it halfway through the summer. How's it going?  For some of us, this is the first year that our middle schoolers, rising high schoolers, have stayed home alone for part or most of the day.  My own son, decided that he was old enough to walk a few miles to another neighborhood to hang out with friends- and not tell me!  In addition to not really "feeling it" when it comes to my list of chores and other projects that I thought would be good for him to do this year.  I've started to get annoyed at his lack of motivation to come out of his room for most of the day and think it's time to revisit the idea of trying out a summer camp or two. I've researched several summer camps in Roanoke, Virginia  to see which ones still have camps open for middle schoolers and am sharing it with you, in case they provide the summer boredom cure that you're looking for.

Camp Alta Mons is an overnight camp in Shawsville, Virginia that has several fun outdoor based camps still open for rising 6th-9th graders.  Camp Alta Mons features lots of outdoor adventure activities such as hiking, canoeing, caving and backpacking

Wilderness Adventure at Eagle's Landing   is an overnight, outdoor adventure camp, with a focus on building confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.

Virginia Outside offers freshwater fishing camps for kids aged 9-14 through the Roanoke Catholic School summer camp program. Virginia Outside provides all bait and tackle, rods and reels, life jackets, and good times.

Pre-Veterinary and Veterinary Science Camps at the RVSPCA will delight your rising 4th-6th grade animal lover.  This hands on experience includes using microscopes, giving injections and visits to local veterinary hospitals.

Roanoke Children's Theatre is great for kids with any experience level.  They will gain confidence and learn important public speaking skills, in addition to theatre skills. Two exciting camps remain this summer suitable for middle and high schoolers- Cirque du RCT and Kaleidoscope Camp.

Goodwill STEM camp This full day camp will have your rising 6th-8th graders participating in fun, hands-on scientific experiments, explorations & field trips.

The Taubman Museum has creative camps for tweens that include fashion, watercolor painting, and pottery.

Good luck with the rest of your summer!
