I consider myself lucky to have been raised on a small farm as a child. We always had a giant garden, raised cattle and had fresh eggs from our chickens. We didn't use the terms free-range, organic, non-GMO, it was just a way of life that had been passed down for generations. Both of my parents had full time careers, and our weekends were spent weeding, canning, freezing for most of the summer. Every year, my dad would raise one cow to "put up" for our family to eat on for the year. We also bought the best tasting pork products from a neighboring farm. As an adult, raising my own family, I have been able to fill my longing for a large garden by frequenting the farmers markets, but I'd never thought about ordering a half/whole cow until I was introduced to Truman Hill Farms earlier this year.
Truman Hill Farms has been a family run farm since the 1800s. In addition to raising grass-fed beef since 2009 on chemical-free pastures with no antibiotics or artificial hormones. The Truman Hill family is proud of their many conservation efforts to protect their land and the waters that flow through their farm. These are some of the many reasons you can feel good buying local beef from this family owned business.
Truman Hill Farms delivers fresh meat weekly to Roanoke, Salem, New River Valley, Smith Mountain Lake and all areas in between. You can order an assortment of ground beef, stew beef, bratwurst, oxtails, and more to be delivered to your home on a weekly basis.
A few times a year, you can also place an order for a quarter, half or full share of beef. This is what I mean by "buying a cow". Although the full sticker price may be daunting at first, you'll save money in the long run and have a freezer full of fresh options for your family. You can also consider splitting a cow with 1 or more families or your parents/grandparents to get the best price per pound.
Ordering a whole or share of cow is as easy as 1, 2, 3:
1. Reserve your quarter, half, or whole cow here.
2. Determine which cuts you'd like included in your order based on this cut sheet . Examples of cuts include: Prime rib roast, London broil, filet mignon, boneless ribeye, t-bone steak, sirloin tip steak, sirloin tip roast, tenderloin roast, hanger steak, brisket, stew meat, New York strip steak, flatiron steak, chuck roast, rump roast, flank steak, burger patties, oxtail, soup bones, sirloin steak, beef tongue, tri-tip, short ribs, beef kabobs, cube steak, eye of round roast, hamburger, skirt steak, fat for tallow, sliced liver, shank, arm roast, ground round, bone-in rib steak, and more!
3. Email your cut sheet to info@trumanhillfarm.com
You'll receive a confirmation phone call when your order is reviewed, and when your cow is ready to be picked up from the processing plant.
You'll want to take several coolers to pick up your frozen meat for transport back to your home/freezer. You'll also likely need a freezer that is separate from the one you have in your refrigerator.
What do you think? Want to give it a try? You won't regret it! Learn more about Truman Hill Farm and place your order here.
