Ring Gymnastics:New Classes this Fall!

This family owned gym, hopes to offer accessible and affordable options for families in the region.

A local family saw a need to provide additional gymnastics opportunities for children, including those that need accessible classes, in the Roanoke Valley.  Stacy Meehan-Westervelt, along with fiancé Esteban, and friend Lydia,  opened Ring Gymnastics this spring.

"Roanoke lacks gymnastics options, especially in the North Roanoke and Botetourt County areas. Travel makes the other 2 Roanoke gyms prohibitive for many families in those areas. In addition, there are also no [handicapped] accessible gyms in the region," Meehan-Westervelt states. They currently offer an aide, when needed, for differently-abled children to be able to participate in class, at no additional charge.

In addition to accessibility, it is important to Ring that gymnastics will be available to talented children who may not be able to afford classes. They are currently in the process of reorganizing as a nonprofit and plan to offer scholarships and sponsorships in the near future.

Stacy, Esteban, and Lydia, have a total of 13 children (yes, 13!), 5 being gymnasts.  Stacy and Esteban, who met at a gym, decided to invest in the new gym instead of a fancy engagement ring, thus the name Ring Gymnastics was born.  They hired Lauren, with a background in dance, to coach the littles during the week. Rain, with a background in cheer, coaches the younger gymnasts on the weekends. Brittany, a former gymnast with 15 years of coaching experience, and Charlotte, a current competitive gymnast who last competed as a level 7, round out the coaches in the Ring family, with a few new coaches joining in Sept. All coaches have been trained in technique and have completed the USA Gymnastics requirements for recreational or competitive coaches, depending on their role, including being background checked and SafeSport certified.
