On July 3rd, Mill Mountain Zoo turned 72! Nestled on the slopes of Mill Mountain, this beloved Roanoke treasure has been a beacon of wildlife education and family fun for generations. It has transformed through the years and has been home to many inhabitants. Anyone remember Ruby the Tiger from their own childhood? We visited to help the zoo celebrate this milestone. Besides the hundreds of cupcakes that were offered to visitors for the birthday, there were many exciting experiences to be had. Let’s take a closer look at what awaits families and their young explorers at this local treasure.
Keeper Chats: Unveiling Nature’s Secrets
One of the most enriching experiences at Mill Mountain Zoo is the keeper chats. These engaging sessions offer an incredible opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of animals from the very people who care for them. On our most recent visit, we were lucky enough to see and hear about 4 animals that are not on regular display but rather used in educational outreach efforts. It was fascinating to hear about the things that made each of these species unique and get a more unclose and personal view and a few opportunities to touch them along the way.
The educational value of these talks cannot be overstated. They provide a deeper understanding of animal behavior, conservation efforts, and the importance of biodiversity. For young minds, it’s an exciting chance to ask questions and get up close and personal with nature’s wonders. The Keeper Chat schedule is posted daily at guest services and you can call ahead to see what animals will be featured that day if you want to consider taking in one of these chats when planning your visit.
Hands-On Fun: Feeding the Pigs and Goats
One of the highlights for younger visitors is the opportunity to feed the pigs and goats. This hands-on activity is not only fun but also educational, offering a direct connection to the animals. The goats patiently waited by their feeding tube ready to gobble up whatever the kiddos would put down the shoot.
It’s a wonderful way for children to understand empathy, responsibility, and the joy of caring for living creatures. The giggles and smiles that come from feeding these animals are memories that will last a lifetime.
All Aboard the Zoo Choo: A Journey Through History
No visit to Mill Mountain Zoo is complete without a ride on the Zoo Choo! This charming miniature train has been a favorite since it first chugged along the tracks 71 years ago. Refurbished in 2023, the Zoo Choo is now better than ever, offering a delightful ride that circles the zoo, providing a unique perspective of the animal exhibits. Rides typically occur over the weekend (weather permitting) and cost an extra $2 per person.
Discovering Regional Wildlife and Exotic Stars
Mill Mountain Zoo is home to a diverse range of animals, both local and exotic. For families, this means an opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of regional wildlife, from the black bear, raccoon, to the curious foxes. The zoo’s focus on local species offers children a chance to learn about the animals that inhabit their own backyards and the importance of preserving their habitats.
The zoo also boasts some exotic stars that captivate visitors of all ages. The majestic snow leopard, with its powerful presence and striking appearance, is a testament to nature’s beauty and strength. The playful red panda, with its fluffy tail and curious demeanor, is a favorite among children, offering endless entertainment and fascination.
These animals not only serve as ambassadors for their species but also highlight the global efforts in conservation and the need to protect endangered animals worldwide.
A Celebration of Learning and Adventure
As Mill Mountain Zoo celebrates its 72nd birthday, it stands as a testament to the power of education, conservation, and family fun. For families with children, a visit to the zoo is more than just a day out; it’s an opportunity to learn, explore, and create lasting memories together. We were dissapointed not to catch a glimpse of the Zoo's new sloth, but you may get lucky if you attend the Walk on the Wild Side this Tuesday evening. Learn more and plan your visit to the zoo here.
