Hunter Johnston: A Journey of Strength, Resilience, and Self-Advocacy

By Shelby Phelan and Hunter Johnston October 28, 2024

As we conclude National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to share the inspiring journey of a remarkable woman: a wife, mother of two amazing boys, business owner, and breast cancer survivor of over 14 years. At just 29, she discovered a lump in her breast. By the age of 30, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and by 31, she was declared cancer-free. While her journey was not easy, it provided her with invaluable lessons and profound strength, reminding us all of the importance of being our own advocates.

In February 2009, after finding the lump, she was sent for a mammogram. However, since she was not yet 30, she was only approved for an ultrasound. The initial advice was to “keep an eye on it.” Unfortunately, eight months later, that small lump had grown from the size of a pea to the size of a marble. She recalls it feeling just like the fake breast she had passed around in her college Epidemiology class, which demonstrated how a breast with cancer might feel. Thanks to that class, she had the knowledge that would later empower her to take action.

When she met with the surgeon about removing the lump, she was told she could wait six more months. Trusting her instincts, she pushed for immediate surgery instead. What followed was a routine post-procedure follow-up that turned into a life-altering meeting. The surgeon confirmed her fears: she had breast cancer. From that moment, her life became a whirlwind of questions and appointments. The cancer was ER/PR/HER2 positive and had spread to her lymph nodes by the time she underwent a mastectomy.

Throughout her journey, she was fortunate to have a wonderful team of doctors, supportive family, and friends by her side. Six rounds of chemotherapy were challenging, but she had something to look forward to: planning her wedding! During her treatment, her now-husband asked her to marry him, and despite the ups and downs, they held onto the light at the end of the tunnel—their wedding day. In 2011, she proudly participated as the "Cancer-Free Bride" at a breast cancer awareness race on the morning of their wedding. They will celebrate 13 years of marriage this April.

Now a mother to two amazing sons, she cherishes every moment spent watching them grow. Since becoming cancer-free, she transitioned to becoming the owner of the Natural Nail Care Clinic, celebrating ten years in business this January. Her passion for making clients happy and transforming their days with beautiful manicures is evident in her work.

Her story serves as a powerful reminder to all: be your own advocate. It was her determination and proactive approach that ultimately helped save her life. As we honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let her journey inspire you to advocate for your health and the health of your loved ones. Remember, you are not alone—there is a community of patients, survivors, and advocates ready to support you every step of the way.
