Guide: Ice Cream and Cool Treats in the Roanoke Valley

July 21, 2022

Is there anything better than treating the kids to an ice cream cone on a hot summer day in Roanoke? We can't think of one.

Luckily, We have a lot of great locally-owned ice cream shops in Roanoke where we can indulge in yummy goodness. Here are some of our favorite places for ice cream in Roanoke:

Pops Ice Cream, Grandin Village, Roanoke, Virginia

What we love: Pops has a fun, quirky 1950's soda shop vibe with the best grilled cheeses and board games to play with your family. What's not to love? They also have iced coffee now- this mom's favorite!

Dilly Dally 1511 Eddy Avenue, Salem, VA 24153

What we love: Dilly Dally is a general store along the Roanoke River Greenway in Salem. They carry a great selection of regionally made goods, campy store basics, and have a wonderful Deli. We love the Sunshine board that encourages community members to give back to others in the form of Dilly Dally treats (deli credit).

Blue Cow Ice Cream, 1115 Piedmont Street SE, Roanoke, Virginia

What we love: Artisan ice creams made in small batches along the Roanoke River Greenway in Roanoke. This is a great way to treat yourself for that family stroll or ride on the Roanoke River Greenway.

Champloo Desserts At Tanglewood Mall, Roanoke, VA

What we love: Champloo is the only spot in Roanoke offering Thai rolled ice cream.  They roll the delicious, fresh milk and ingredients in front of your eyes- so it's a bit of a show too!  They also are one of few places in Roanoke selling Boba teas.

Homestead Creamery, 7254 Booker T Washington Hwy Wirtz, Virginia 24184

What we love: Homestead Creamery is all about farm fresh goodness!  The farm market offers delicious sandwiches, ice cream and farm fresh products locally raised in Franklin County, Virginia.  Homestead is only 20 minutes from Roanoke and is a great excuse to check out other fun things to do at Smith Mountain Lake, like a visit to the SML Alpaca Farm.

Here are a few other local ice cream, smoothie, and shaved ice shops along with a fun idea for your family to try.  Why not figure out who makes the BEST strawberry ice cream- or whatever your favorite flavor is?  Take a progressive tour to 3-5 spots and capture tasting notes at each spot. Let us know who wins and we may send you a gift card for more ice cream.
